I swear, I couldn’t have made this up if I tried. Inspired by true events, Gold is the story of the 1993 Bre-X mining scandal, when a massive gold deposit was supposedly discovered in the jungles of Indonesia. It tells how Kenny Wells, played by Matthew McConaughey, teams with a geologist (Édgar Ramírez) to find gold and the repercussions of coming into massive wealth as though he’s the Tony Montana of gold, political alliances, and the eventual rise of adversaries and the disappearance of a fortune.
Reminds you of anyone? No? No overcompensating businessman stuck in the 80’s with a receding hairline, terrible wardrobe, a trophy wife and a penchant for gold?
The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Édgar Ramírez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll, Toby Kebbell, Craig T. Nelson, Stacy Keach and Bruce Greenwood and opens January 27.
