I know you guys. I know you’re like me. You like your Marvels, and you can’t wait for your Civil Wars and all that, but I know you also love a good, non-franchise, original movie that has to do all the heavy character lifting all by itself, without any existing property providing context or that guaranteed emotional investment that the studios love so much.
Preferably, also, if David O. Russell is nowhere near it.
And if it’s got a Gosling as a washed-up detective and a Crowe as a slimy, cynical, brutish enforcer? Well, I bet you’d love to see that tomorrow if it was possible.
Unfortunately, it’s not, but Shane Black is a generous deity, and in order to tide use over until the May 20th release he giveth to us this new trailer for his upcoming The Nice Guys.
Yes, it’s two white dudes running around in 70’s L.A. doing white dude stuff, but if they end up doing it as well as it looks like they will from this trailer then I think there’s room for that.
Do yourself a favour, though, and stop watching at 2:10 — there’s a great sight gag just after that that I wish I hadn’t seen until the actual movie.
And in case you needed a synopsis:
The film takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl (Margaret Qualley) and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.
