It’s been buzzing away in the background for a while now, occasionally surfacing for a second to face (justifiable) blowback for its whitewashed casting, but the live-action adaptation of the classic manga-and-then-anime Ghost In The Shell has now finally emerged with a fully formed trailer.
Have a look:
Apart from the source material, the movie’s pedigree is thus:
Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman).
Adapted by Jonathan Herman — who was half of the screenwriting duo behind Straight Outta Compton and Jamie Moss — who wrote Street Kings, a forgettable, mid-budget Keanu Reeves flick from the late 2000’s.
Judging just by that, Ghost In The Shell is a bit of a wild card: it could be good, it could be tripe.
The one area where the movie does seem to be of interest is the visuals, which —
— look like they’re trying for something interesting — or at least striking. The director of photography, Jess Hall, has a fairly…varied…filmography thus far — with Transcendence, The Spectacular Now, 30 Minutes Or Less, Hot Fuzz, and Son of Rambow being some of his past works — so, once again: could be good, could be tripe. We will have to wait until March 2017 to see.
But at least one thing we do know: Takeshi Kitano!
