A 21 Jump Street cameo aside, Johnny Depp hasn’t toplined a great live-action movie for nearly a decade. Seriously, look at this list of cinematic atrocities. LOOK AT IT!
Into the Woods
The Lone Ranger
The Rum Diary
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Alice in Wonderland
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Jesus. John Cusack has made better career choices over the last 10 years. Which is why today’s trailer for Black Mass — the Scott Cooper-directed film about murderous Boston crime boss turned FBI informant Whitey Bulger — is such a revelation. I don’t know which great actor killed Depp, cut off his face, and used it as a mask during the trailer’s central scene, but if this is the result I absolutely condone the crime.
Seriously, that’s Inglourious Basterds card-game-in-the-basement intense. If Depp’s entire performance is as consistently brilliant as the snippets shown in this trailer, Black Mass could be the film that reminds everyone he’s one of the great actors of his generation.
The completely ridiculous Black Mass cast also includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Corey Stoll, Kevin Bacon, Juno Temple, Adam Scott, Peter Sarsgaard and Jesse Plemons. The film opens September 18, 2015.
