There’s only so many ways you can tell the “social misfit/coming of age” story before it becomes stale, and yet this trailer for Fat Kid Rules The World intrigues me. It’s about a, well, fat kid named Troy (Jacob Wysocki from the excellent Terri) who tries to kill himself, only to be abruptly saved by an errant punk rock wannabe (Matt O’Leary of the phenomenal Natural Selection). The two strike up an unlikely friendship and try to form a punk band, despite Troy’s lack of discernable musical talent. They also, of course, help each other fight their respective personal demons.
Take a look (NSFW for a bit o’ language):
I like what I’m seeing. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but it has solid potential. Both leads come from solid indie backgrounds where they’ve proven themselves to be capable of excellent performances, and it’s bolstered by Billy Campbell (“The Killing” ) as the dad. Perhaps most bizarre is that it’s directed by… Matthew Lillard. Yes, that Matthew Lillard. It’s based on the novel of the same name by K.L. Going, which I believe our Dustin was a big fan of.
Anyway, whaddaya think? I’m still hung up on the fact that it’s directed by someone who starred in Wing Commander.
