Richard Linklater has given us some of the most sensitive and honest portrayals of humanity that have ever appeared on film. The Before Trilogy and Boyhood by themselves provide more insight than most people will ever achieve over a lifetime of work. So he’s allowed to blow off a little steam with a party now and then, I reckon, even if it is, as Rebecca has reported, pushing the boundaries of cinematic bro-ness to stratospheric (stratbrospheric?) levels.
The new red band trailer certainly makes it look like that, but also like a lot of fun:
Besides, you just know that Linklater has been making some super secret movie about the trials and perils of growing old in an age of looming catastrophic climate change that manages to explore things delicately and meticulously both on a macro and personal level, and that somehow he started making before he was even born, so — yeah, let him enjoy this one, I think.
