Don't Let This Trailer Fool You, Cronenberg's 'Maps To The Stars' Is 10 Shades Of Crazy
He brought you such brain-melting body horror as The Fly and eXistenZ. He gave you Robert Pattison, bent over, sweating and probed in Cosmopolis. Now David Cronenberg locks his twisted lens on Hollywood for Maps To The Stars. And while this trailer tries to make the movie look like a taut and tense thriller, don’t be fooled. In truth, it’s something much more fucked up and fun.
I had the good fortune to review Maps To The Stars last fall when it played the New York Film Festival. So I can promise you Maps To The Stars is part Hollywood satire with a pitch-black brand of humor, and part Greek tragedy. To explain how that works would be to give away some of the film’s most shocking moments. Let me say this: it’s ghoulishly funny, but not for everyone.
If you need further proof beyond my word, and my review, remember this was John Waters’ favorite film of 2014. He said of it, “Hilariously funny and, dare I say it, yes, pernicious. I love this film more than I love my own mustache.” Why this wasn’t used as a pullquote for the trailer, I’ll never understand.
So if you like your humor with sharp edges and jagged gasps, do check it out when it hits theaters February 27th.
