Do We Really Need An EmoPretty Version of Harry Potter? SyFy's 'The Magicians' Seem to Think So

Okay, okay, so magicians are hot. Not looks-hot (although you might guess that from this SyFy series trailer); rather, we love books, film and television about magic hot…and the idea of people who can perform it. I’ll check out almost any series that has something to do with sorcery, but there has to be a little something more going on than “Hey, look! Pretty people doing magic tricks,” which is about all we get from a first look at The Magicians, an adaptation of Lev Grossman’s 2009 novel. Starring Jason Ralph (Grace and Frankie, A Most Violent Year, Aquarius) as prettyboy Quentin Coldwater, a student at an exclusive New York magic university, and Rick Worthy (well-known to science fiction fans for BSG, Star Trek and Heroes) as Dean Fogg, the series follows a group of 20-somethings discovering magic is real — and dangerous. So, why does this trailer feel like the emptiest of CW fodder — where the biggest feats involve levitating a skirted fellow student and…uh, swirling up a house of cards? Am I being too harsh? You tell me.

(Um, is that all there is?)

The Magicians also stars Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Summer Bishil, and (gloriously named) Sosie Bacon as Alice. The series premieres on SyFy in 2016.
