Damsels In Distress Trailer: There's Enough Whimsy Here To Kill A Man... But I'm OK With That

I like to tell myself that I’m not into these kinds of films, that I find the overtly twee and whimsical films to be tiresome and pretentious. But the truth is that when they’re done right, they can be works of wonder. Films that deal with serious subjects with a deft, lighthearted touch, with quirky characters and a strong independent vibe are, when well-executed well, incredibly enjoyable.

Damsels In Distress may well be another solid entry in that type of film. It’s directed by the long-absent Whit Stillman, who has directed some truly fabulous films, including Barcelona, Metropolitan and The Last Days Of Disco, but hasn’t made a new film since 1998. Damsels In Distress, I confess, looks disgustingly adorable and charming. I hate it on general principle. I’m totally going to see it.

A trio of girls set out to change the male-dominated environment of the Seven Oaks college campus, and to rescue their fellow students from depression, grunge and low standards of every kind.

Cute, no? It’s got a damn fine cast, including Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton (the babysitter obsessed with Steve Carrell in Crazy Stupid Love), Aubrey Plaza, and Megalyn Echikunwoke. Now shut up and watch the trailer:
