Chris Hemsworth Goes Full Loki in Michael Mann's Kickass 'Blackhat' Trailer

It’s been five years since Michael Mann’s (Heat, Miami Vice, Collateral) last Gritty Thriller™, and it’s high time Anthony Hopkins terrorized us again, so this sleek Blackhat trailer is a welcome Monday diversion. It’s also kind of cool to see Thor letting out his inner bad guy, even if it comes with a wavering American accent (we don’t really want to forget his Aussieness, do we?). Hemsworth plays hacker extraordinaire Nicholas Hathaway — currently serving the requisite jail time as mandated by film doctrine (years sentenced < expert level/government need > crime committed = release deal). Commandeered by the feds to track down the biggest, baddest cyberterrorist this side of Facebook’s ad network, and up against an enemy with no clear motive, Hathaway may be in over his head. (Where the fork is Mjolnir when he really needs it?)

Once it gets going, the trailer looks pretty damned good, and the cast is fantastic; Viola Davis, John Ortiz, Wei Tang, Holt McCallany, (perennially creepy) William Mapother, and Leehom Wang. And I’m pretty certain that’s an uncredited Anthony Hopkins as the big bad cyberwolf. That said, it’s the Michael Mann pedigree that’ll assure my ticket…

The director has been working on Blackhat over 2 1/2 yearsmet with several (including jailed) hackers to research cyber-hacking espionage, and likens his self-immersion to that of anthropologists’ “…if they’re going to write about a tribe in the Nilotic Sudan, they go live with a tribe in the Nilotic Sudan for a year.”

THR recently did a fascinating interview with Mann, wherein he discusses in-depth the film’s inception and research:

Blackhat will be in theaters January 16, 2015.
