He’s played supporting roles in comedies (Get Smart, The Other Guys); he’s provided some good-natured levity in action films (Fast & Furious, G.I. Joe: Retaliation ); he’s been in some unintentionally funny movies (uh, Southland Tales); and he’s been likable presence in very bad comedies (The Tooth Fairy, Game Plan), but now Dwayne Johnson is ready to lead a good comedy, here of the action variety.
In Rawson Thurber’s (Dodgeball, We’re the Millers) Central Intelligence, Dwayne Johnson is the reckless, break-all-the rules half of the buddy cop duo, while Kevin Hart plays the throw-the-rule-book-away-because-I-don’t-even-want-to-fucking-be-here half. On the eve of a class reunion, The Rock’s character — a former overweight bully turned contract killer for the CIA — enrolls an old high-school classmate-turned accountant to help foil a plan to sell classified military secrets.
If Dwayne Johnson’s charm is not enough to sell you on the film, which arrives in theaters next summer, Aaron Paul’s presence should push you over. Also, the screenplay comes — in part — from Ike Barinholtz, and if you don’t recognize the name, The Mindy Project fans will certainly recognize the face.
