After the dark and somber smorgasbord o’ villainy that was the last trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this is a refreshing surprise. Unlike the unrelenting gloom of Nolan’s Caped Crusader or even Snyder’s Man Of Steel, Spider-Man (or, more accurately, Peter Parker) is a comic book character who lends himself to lightness. It’s fine for Andrew Garfield to perch on rooftops like a well-coiffed gargoyle and ruminate on the mess his life has become. That’s human and relatable and it wouldn’t make sense for us not to see the burden of that great responsibility that comes with his great power. But it’s a relief to see that between fighting Rhino, Electro and possibly The Green Goblin, Parker still has time to crack wise with Aunt May (Sally Field) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Enjoy the trailer and the German subtitles.
I know some people chaffed against some of the humor in the first Garfield Spider-Man film. Words like “snark” and “hipster” were used liberally. But I think the glimpses of humor here are quite sweet and relatable. As long as we don’t swing in the complete opposite direction of snark and land in goofy territory, we should be fine. So, to sum up, wisecracks are good, dance montages are bad. The end.
