As skeptical as I might have initially been about the trailer for HBO’s Big Little Lies — rich white people dealing with rich white people problems — the trailer intrigued me, and reading more about the Liane Moriarty novel upon which it’s based sold me. It traffics in a lot of soap opera tropes — older men leaving their wives for younger women; older women resenting the younger wives; who’s the father? drama; and therapy sessions. But there’s more to Big Little Lies than that. There’s murder, for instance, but it also deals extensively with bullying and domestic abuse, and how those behaviors can be passed on from generation to generation.

I admit that bearded Adam Scott and the ever-so-brief shot of Lisa Bonet Zoe Kravitz in the trailer also captivated me, not to mention the presence of Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern.

The dark comedy is catnip for the HBO audience.

The 7-episode limited series directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) premieres on February 19th, 2017.
