You only need see the vast fields, the dusty horizons, and the presence of Michael Shannon to know that the director of Loving is Jeff Nichols. It might be surprising, however, to learn that the Jeff Nichols film is based on the true story of an interracial couple who, in 1958, brought their court case, Loving vs. Virginia, all the way to the Supreme Court. In 1967, SCOTUS ruled unanimously that bans on interracial marriage were illegal.

Joel Edgerton (a new Nichols’ regular, who was also in Midnight Special) plays Richard Loving to Ruth Negga’s Mildred Loving. We’d love to see Negga become a regular in Nichols’ universe, too.

The trailer looks fantastic, and may compete with Birth of the Nation for all the Oscar statues this year.
