Stovepipe hats, flying martial arts, and vampires? Set against the backdrop of pre-Civil War America? Really? We’re going to try to play this seriously? As I may have mentioned before, I fear that Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is going to fall victim to the same folly that Jon Favreau’s Cowboys Vs. Aliens did, which is to fail to recognize its own inherent silliness. If you’ve got a subject that bananas, you have to at least acknowledge it somewhat by integrating some humor into the project. Yet this one looks like it’s going to play it completely straight, as did Cowboys Vs. Aliens, which ended up being a dreary, utterly joyless affair.
That said, lead actor Benjamin Walker certainly nails the look of Lincoln, by which I mean he looks like a young Liam Neeson, who is the actor I always assumed should play Lincoln. So I guess if you’re not going to get Neeson, might as well get someone who looks like him, right?
Whatever, here’s the goddamn trailer. Lots of things go smash, there’s a bunch of slow motion, and there’s a lot of axing — if you’re into that sort of thing.
