"There is no middle ground"

There are very very few things in the universe that make me as happy as this ten minute preview. I like this more than I hate most things, and that list is very long and difficult to top. HBO knows how to milk the internet in advance of airing a show, that’s for sure. This marks the second featurette, in addition to a couple of teasers over the summer and last week’s trailer that TK wrote up. And the show is still several months away from its debut in the spring.

What do we see here? We get the usual ramblings of actors about what they think of their characters (Peter Dinklage’s probably the most interesting with his take on Tyrion) punctuated by snippets of scenes of each. Most of the major characters are featured, although curiously the Stark children other than Jon are left out, except as quick glimpses. This probably isn’t too surprising, as if I recall correctly, they each played less significant roles in the first novel than Jon, though Rob is of course critical in the second half of the novel.

The best parts are the briefest glimpses of the colorful background cast. There’s Drogo looking the part of barbarian warlord, and the secret heir who’s forged the aurochs helmet (talk about retaining even the relatively obscure details of the novels). Daenerys with a dragon’s egg. Sandor with his burned face and holding the helmet of the Hound. And deliciously amoral Littlefinger.

Inside Game of Thrones

“The common people pray for rain, healthy children, and a summer that never ends. It is no matter to them if the high lords play their game of thrones, so long as they are left in peace. They never are.” - Ser Jorah Mormont
