And There Was Much Rejoicing: Zach Galifianakis Will Return To TV With "Between Two Ferns"

I don’t cotton to much of what passes for contemporary “hipster” culture, whatever that is, preferring those who self-identified with the label when wearing a fedora was cool. Even if it wasn’t ironic. Also, my waist is too big around for skinny jeans and anything near my eyes freaks me right the hell out, so my glasses will always need actual lenses. But one thing I can get on board with is relishing being into, a fan of, or even just vaguely knowing about something before most of my peers. I used to proudly proclaim how I discovered the band Eve 6 on a lark purchase at a record store in Wichita Falls, TX while I was visiting my grandparents, before their first video ever premiered on MTV — then the band released a second album and I stopped being as proud. So it went until the time the lead singer anonymously attended one of the same college parties that I did, and I didn’t even bring it up because nobody cared anymore, if they ever really did. He seemed like a decent enough fellow, though.

But it will take quite a fall from Hollywood’s grace for me to never not be proud that I jumped aboard the Zach Galifianakis bandwagon when he was a barely-known talk show host on VH1’s hardly-watched “Late World.” Upon seeing him play the piano between one-liners for the first time, Galifianakis has felt like my comedic spirit animal, and watching him shave his beard live on air really did seem like a Biblical event. I even sought out the terrible the rip-off of the even more terrible Ski School 2, Out Cold, purely because I knew Fat Jesus was in it. Galifianakis could still be getting punched out by Mike Tyson in Hangover 17 and I wouldn’t hold it against him. So, it’s just a bonus that he’s still producing his own brand of comedy with fare like “Between Two Ferns.”

It’s an even bigger, possibly bordering on “Biblical,” bonus that the next installment of “Ferns” will be broadcast on Comedy Central with a whole half-hour of interviews. The only downside is that, unlike the also insta-classic Funny or Die series “Drunk History,” we won’t be getting weekly nuggets of Galifianakis brilliance, but just one night of deliberately awkward frivolity. The special will air before The Comedy Awards on May 6 and guests will include Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, and, apparently, the real life Richard Branson, which means you have at least one reason to watch Comedy Central on a Sunday night. As long as it doesn’t conflict with “Game of Thrones,” I’ll be there.

If, somehow, you’ve never seen an episode of “Between Two Ferns” and don’t get all the hubbub, bub, here are two of my favorites:

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Conan O’Brien & Andy Richter from Between Two Ferns

Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis: Natalie Portman from Between Two Ferns

Rob Payne also writes the comic The Unstoppable Force, tweets on the Twitter @RobOfWar, and his ware can be purchased here (if you’re into that sort of thing). His second best Halloween costume was as Alan from The Hangover, his first was Abbey Road era John Lennon.
