How did no one think to make this movie before? With American’s love of presidential biopics and buddy cop movies, this seems inevitable. Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey will star as Elvis and Nixon respectively in the creatively titled Elvis and Nixon.
“Elvis & Nixon” recounts the bizarre meeting between the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and 37th President of the United States. On the morning of Dec. 21st, 1970, Elvis showed up at the door of the White House requesting a meeting with Nixon. His urgent request? The King wanted to be sworn in as an undercover Federal agent. If Nixon’s oval office recordings caught the dialogue on tape, “Elvis & Nixon” should have a fairly accurate idea of what went down.
Holy crap! I hadn’t even thought about the secret tapes! That’s the best thing that could have happened to this movie. Because here’s the thing: regardless of the number of prestigious screenwriters you get to write that dialog, nothing they come up with is going to be as banana pants crazy as the shit those two must have actually said.
I’m also thrilled that Shannon and Spacey will have an opportunity to show off their comedic chops. Spacey played a great straight man in Horrible Bosses, but I’m hoping his Nixon will be a bit more on the zany side. And Michael Shannon as strung out Elvis is maybe the best thing I can think of. Shannon is hysterical, and not enough people know that. He’s been flying just under most people’s radar with his amazing dramatic roles, and I’m hoping this will be his big break into household name status.
This is going to be a comedy, right? RIGHT?
