You WILL Be Watching This Movie: Martin McDonagh Edition

There is a rarefied company of directors whose movies I will instantly go see, without the need for any knowledge of title, plot, casting, a trailer, or in fact any information at all. Usually this is partly because their movies just gel with my particular sensibility, and partly due to their decently long enough track record.

The Coen Brothers, David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino — they are the primary denizens of this group.

Martin McDonagh, by contrast, has made just two feature films — In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths — and already the writer-director has barged his way rudely into this company. Understandably so, I feel, as In Bruges is one of the best comedies since the dawn of the millennium (and definitely somewhere in the ranking of Best Movies since then too), and Seven Pscyhopaths is a rough diamond that renders unto you special, transgressive, and unknown pleasures on repeat viewing.

So, then, this is all you should need to know:

Martin McDonagh

Frances McDormand

Sam Rockwell

Woody Harrelson

You’re welcome.

Oh, you’re still here?

How much more do you need?!

Alright, the movie’s gonna be called Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and is apparently about a ‘woman (McDormand), whose daughter is murdered, who then goes to war with the police in her hometown because she thinks they are not interested in pursuing justice.’

That should tide you over.

And, as a bonus, one of the funniest scenes ever filmed:
