The Marvel news machine is spitting out updates almost faster than I can type, which to be honest, isn’t all that fast (60ish wpm?)…but still, you get my point. Shit is happening! Robert Downey Jr. played coy with all that will he or won’t he do Iron Man 4 business, and now he’s headed to Captain America 3 to mess with Chris Evans — who’s also been playing with our heads. Meanwhile, rumors were swirling about Avengers 3 being split in two because the epic Thanos battle couldn’t be contained. Later, came reports the Cap, Thor and possibly Black Widow would be missing from Avengers 3, so alternate team members Ant-Man and Doctor Strange could be brought into the fold. Does your head hurt yet? Yeah, mine too.
Never fear, my fellow Marvel maze-maneuverers; things are only going to get more confusing before they’re cleared up. According to Badass Digest, everyone is just falling into his/her proper place, with those earlier puzzle pieces fitting into the whole picture nicely. Robert Downey Jr.’s new deal covers his major Captain America 3 (“co-starring”) role (and possibly Avengers 4). The two titles being bandied about are Civil War and Fallen Son. With the way things are supposed to go at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron (swipe to see the *SPOILERS* if you like: Captain American will assemble a new team of some known Avengers, and some not previously seen. Digest says last they heard it was Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and the Vision, but the scene has yet to be filmed, so members could still change. *END SPOILERS,* and leading up to the Captain America 3 Rogers vs. Stark storyline, it looks like the Cap may indeed be left out of Avengers 3. Got all that? You know what this convoluted, multi-picture story arc really needs? Somebody — or maybe a couple of somebodies — to pull it all together, and Marvel is in talks with just the right guys (yeah, guys…hmpf). If they have to pick men, at least they’ve chosen well: Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are reportedly in negotiations to direct Captain America 3, and Avengers 3 and 4. Apparently, Whedon is ready to move on after Age of Ultron and the Russo brothers are Kevin Feige’s first choice to take over the Avengers helm. Since The Winter Soldier is thus far my favorite of the Marvel films, team Russo branching out to the Avengers films sounds great to me..
If you don’t mind the Spoilers, head over to BD for more details and some speculation on how the storylines will crossover — including the Cap’s future fate. I’d sure cry if something happened to that beautiful…well, you know.
