Everybody’s watching Shameless, right? Because Joanna told you to watch it way bay in 2013, and Dustin’s been banging the drum for a while now. Seriously, it’s phenomenal. It’s the first show I tell people to watch when they ask for a recommendation.* If you’ve been in a coma/ space/ some sort of rock induced time travel affair and haven’t been watching it, go do that right now. You still have plenty of time to catch up before the fifth season starts early next year.
If you have been watching, here’s the latest casting news. Spoilers through the end of season 4.
Emily Bergl who was amazing as the Gallagher’s older half- sister Sammi has been promoted to series regular.
Sasha Alexander (Rizzoli & Isles), who will always be Gretchen Witter to me, has signed on for a major recurring arc as Helene one of Lip’s professors. The character is “erudite, confident and sexy with a wild side.” So she’s going to bang Lip, right? I mean, let’s get real, that’s what that means.
Justin Chatwin, who was missing for most of season 4 and presumed dead, will be returning for season 5 as Steve/ Jimmy although his full arc hasn’t been decided yet.
But that arc will probably have Steve/ Jimmy competing for Fiona’s affections with Dermot Mulroney. Jeffery Dean Morgan was introduced in the season 4 finale as Fiona’s reformed bad boy boss/ love interest, but that role’s been tweaked and handed off to Mulroney.
Which I can’t really say I’m thrilled with. I loved Mulroney as Mr. Fancypants Russell on New Girl, but that role might be preventing me from seeing him as an ex- con and AA/NA group leader. Plus I’ve had a soft spot for JDM ever since he lost the look- alike- actor- off to Javier Bardem.
And there are not a lot of men who can pull this look off. You shouldn’t waste that.
*It’s the first show I tell people to watch when they don’t ask for a recommendation. I’ve forcefully instructed a lot of people to start watching when we were not talking about tv at all. Sorry about that, guys.
