Just When You Thought Woody Allen's Casting Choices Couldn't Get Any Grosser, Miley Cyrus Joins His Amazon Series
Woody Allen may still have enough fans and strong enough name recognition that people are still ready and eager to make and see his movies, but he’s also become the living embodiment of that Wooderson line from Dazed & Confused.
Just replace “high school girls” with “romantic leads.” And, really, most of them aren’t that far out of high school. Just in the last decade, we’ve seen hot early-20s actress after hot early-20s actress play the naive wide-eyed foil to a much older man. When Scarlett Johansson graduated out of the role, she was replaced by Emma Stone, who did two turns at playing the wide-eyed muse. And today the casting was announced for Woody Allen’s new untitled Amazon series.
Miley F*cking Cyrus. No one knows what the show is about, except that it’s set in the 1960s, Allen has “regretted every second” of the process of making it, and it stars Cyrus (and Elaine May!), alongside Allen himself.
Now, there’s still a chance Miley will turn out to be playing something other than Woody Allen’s romantic and sexual interest, so I’m going to hold onto that small hope as long as possible.
