Will Ferrell And Kristen Wiig Bring New Life To Lifetime "Drama"
I warn you, this trade news sounds like an April Fools’ prank. It’s not. It’s just awesome.
THR reports that in secret Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig teamed up for a Lifetime dramatic thriller called A Deadly Adoption, which will hit TV this summer. In it the pair play a married couple who are barren and desperate for a baby. Enter Jessica Lowndes, playing a pregnant girl the couple takes in with the goal of adopting her upcoming bundle of joy. But as you’d expect from a Lifetime movie, things take a dark turn.
Why would the SNL alums sign up for a movie like this? Well, according to the trade Deadly Adoption won’t be played straight. It’ll be “campy and fun and a contemporary wink at the genre.” Produced by Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions, this pic is penned in part by Andrew Steele, who wrote The Spoils of Babylon, a over-the-top mini-series that parodied soap operas and starred both Wiig and Ferrell.
Officially, A Deadly Adoption is meant to help commemorate Liftetime’s 25th year on television. Unofficially it seems to be apart of a rebranding effort on Lifetime’s part to make their typical histrionics, tear-jerking schlock into something a bit smarter and more self-aware. Also in this vein, they’ll soon be unveiling The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, a mini-series inspired by the success of their silly and salacious TV movie Lizzie Borden Took an Ax. (Now on Netflix.)

To me, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles looks like Lifetime’s take on American Horror Story. Count us in. And next Monday look for my review of its first ep, which airs Sunday night.
