It seems that DC Comics - and yes I know the ‘C’ stands for comics but just calling them DC outside a comics context seems confusing, and calling them Detective Comics would just confuse everyone, so I’m technically repeating myself and happy to do so - is angling to have Supergirl get her own television series. Everyone knows this ends up on CW right? I can’t help thinking that despite the lower budget, somehow SHIELD would be several times better on CW.
Several facts. First, Michael Green is helming it, which makes sense because he was also instrumental to Smallville and the upcoming Gotham.
Second, it’s on the wave behind Constantine, Gotham, and Flash, so if those definitively flop, there might very well be a reconsideration of moving forward with another comic-based show, especially one with the handicap of being about a girl. Because eww.
Third, it’s been more or less confirmed that the show won’t attempt to tie in with the DC film universe at all. Which is sort of disappointing for those who like big ambitious things, but also encouraging since removing this one step further from the Zack Snyder orbit means that maybe nobody will get raped in the first episode.
Finally, we need to have a conversation about the semantics of the title. I mean, yes, “Supergirl” is the name from the comics. But if 80% of Game of Thrones watchers have never bothered reading one of the books, and apparently it’s pretentious to suggest they should, then I don’t see anything wrong with changing the name of a b-list character from a comic book the vast majority of the target audience has never held in their hands to something not infantilizing the character right in the title. We need ideas people:
Superwoman: sounds … I don’t know, overly serious and a little funny?
Superlady: no one should play this character except Betty White or maybe Maggie Smith.
Superbitch: okay I admit that this would increase the odds I’d give the show a shot by at least eleventy seven percent.
Come on English, we have more words for women who like to have sex than the Eskimos have words for snow, but we can’t come up with a single word to use in the place of “girl” in this name?
