Ask Robert Smigel — former writer on Saturday Night Live — and he’ll tell you that Bill Murray was the funniest cast member ever on Saturday Night Live, but that Will Ferrell was the all around best cast member. Jay Mohr thinks Bill Murray was the greatest of all time, while Lorne Michaels and others have suggested that Dana Carvey is the best SNL cast member ever.
In an interview with Howard Stern this morning, Bill Murray himself has weighed in on the best SNL cast member debate (via Splitsider)
“Well, there’s been extraordinary talent, let’s get real. I don’t want to start listing names because there’s too many that I would forget, but between Eddie Murphy and [Dana] Carvey and Mike Myers and Will Ferrell and so forth … I think Bill Hader probably did the best work anyone ever did on that show … It took him a little while to get going, but once he got going it was extraordinary.”
I definitely agree that he’s the best since Will Ferrell, though I think we can all agree that Jim Breuer was the best cast member ever, and that the best character ever was Goat Boy. OBVIOUSLY.
Honestly, though, my all-time favorite Hader sketch is probably the dress rehearsal for The Californians, but only because of the intensity with which he lost his shit.
