The Most Surprising Addition to the 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' Cast

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Star Wars: Episode VIII has officially begun principal photography in London, and that three new faces have been added to the cast. You may be the most excited about the addition of Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern because, well, because they’re Benicio del Toro and Laura Dern.

But the third new actor announced today is an intriguing one. Because in a franchise as huge as Star Wars, included in the same breath as those other two actors, who the heck is Kelly Marie Tran?

As it turns out, she’s pretty damn cool.

Tran spent much of the last couple years at College Humor. Do we think the new Star Wars installment will feature Millennials in space, because she clearly has a knack for that.

She also taught us about the period demon that lives inside all women—

And the greatest sleepover game ever.

She also had a web series called Ladies Like Us.

Oh, and according to this old YouTube channel, girl’s got pipes.

Tran has ventured outside of internet credits a bit in the last couple of years, most notably with two episodes of About a Boy and a Sarah Hyland movie in post-production. But the question stands: how does an internet comedian with a list of credits only five years old land a presumably major (or at substantial enough to be listed alongside Dern and del Toro) role in the biggest franchise out there?

Damned if I know, but it’s hard not to be excited for her.
