Who Is Andy Serkis Playing in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

I don’t really worship at any actor’s altar, but neither do I think it’s a stretch to call Andy Serkis a performance god. The man who brought Gollum to life, who’s played everyone from King Kong and Planet of the Apes’ Caesar to Albert Einstein, and whose magic and appeal is seemingly endless has already scored a role in Star Wars: Episode VII. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves revealed that when he showed J.J. Abrams some early Apes footage, Abrams was so “blown away” by Serkis that he hired the actor for Episode VII. And the demand for his brilliant skill set (actor, director, author, voice artist) continues — he’s co-founded a performance capture studio (The Imaginarium), which has also been hired by Abrams and Joss Whedon. Serkis revealed this past week that “The Imaginarium is the performance capture consultant” on Avengers 2,” but that he’s also playing a role. And when asked if the role was motion capture, or whether we’d see his own face, Serkis replied, “I’m not at liberty to mention. But it’s all the same to me. I’ve never drawn a distinction when playing a role, whether it be live action or performance capture. Acting is acting. It’s just basically what you wear to the set that’s different.”

Serkis has said he’s working closely with Mark Ruffalo — and alluded to coaching him. (Ruffalo) “has ownership” of the Hulk now,” so what role is Serkis playing himself? Hitfix says Serkis is not playing any of the roles already announced, and James Spader has done his own performance capture, so everybody say, “Hmm…”

I think it’s time for the Geekternet experts to start theorizing.
