If like me, you’re in the process of going through The X-Files back catalog so your memory will be fresh when the new miniseries airs, you can relax a little — there’s plenty of time. Although we’ve been hoping for an early non-denominational holiday present, it looks like the 10th season won’t kick off on Fox until next year, specifically, January 24, 2016.

Still, with the miniseries wrapped,

Chris Carter is doing publicity rounds, and he’s given THR the inside scoop on Mulder and Scully’s relationship status, both personal and professional. Obviously, ***Spoilerish information follows***

The creator and showrunner says the agents are fractured “in an interesting way.”

“We play with that relationship. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It’s something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie.”

Speaking at Pittsburgh’s World Comic-Con last weekend, David Duchovny played coy about whether that split was still in effect by the end of the six episodes:

“In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged. I don’t know where it’s going. I really don’t know. I’m trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode … It’s yet to be determined.”

Maybe we’ll catch a few more details from lucky attendees of New York Comic-Con; Fox announced the first episode, “My Struggle” will be screening Saturday, October 10th (sold out). Chris Carter and David Duchovny will also take on a Q & A session. I’m still curious whether the miniseries is setting up a reboot, or a next generation, future series.
