David Tennant — the 10th Doctor — helped calm our fears of the oncoming apocalypse over the weekend (although he’s also still capable of bringing us much joy and hotness), but there are actual developments going on in the world of Doctor Who, as well.

Namely, Peter Capaldi is hanging it up. The 12th Doctor will end his run after three seasons, capping it off with the 2017 Christmas Special. Here’s his statement:

One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best. From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.

It will also be the end of the run for longtime showrunner Steven Moffat, meaning the one guy who has been resistant to bring in a female Doctor will be leaving just as the opportunity to do so arises. The new showrunner is Chris Chibnall, who ran Broadchurch, and is familiar with a perfectly good replacement for Capaldi, Olivia Colman:

Hayley Atwell is also an acceptable replacement, as is any decision that means bringing back David Tennant.

Meanwhile, there are still 12 episodes left with Capaldi, which will be returning on April 15th with a new companion, Pearl Mackie.

And that’s what’s going on with Doctor Who right now.
