What Hellboy Reboot? Jeffrey Tambor Has Feelings.

Everything gets reboots, remakes and re-imaginings, so is the way in Hollywood. With geeks ruling the land and superhero franchises the billion-dollar foundations of an entire industry, it was inevitable that studios would start looking through their back-catalogue for familiar properties to give another go. That didn’t make the news of a Hellboy reboot sting any less, especially for those of us who absolutely adore the del Toro duology (objective fact: Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is the best superhero adaptation ever made, and that is final). Never mind that Neil Marshall is a great director and David Harbour has a damn good face for the role, there’s still a lot of fan loyalty for the team that fought hard for many years to make the conclusion to their own series.

Del Toro and Perlman have already said their bits, and Doug Jones has done his fair share of liking supportive tweets that both praise the upcoming reboot’s team and express disappointment that their own movie won’t happen. Selma Blair tweeted support to Harbour, and Seth MacFarlane didn’t do anything because he’s only really tolerable as a German talking cloud of gas. So far, so civil, right?

Not for Jeffrey Tambor, who is throwing down HARD for his team.

That’s Hellboy creator Mike Mignola there, getting the ice-cold shoulder from national treasure Jeffrey Tambor. And it didn’t stop there.

Godfather references and everything!

He’s also re-tweeted many fan messages of support and a few social media hype-men who “admire his steez”.

In fairness to Mike Mignola, he’s not really honour-bound to any creative team, nor is he banned from taking his own beloved material and finding it a new studio or home to bring it to life, especially now that everyone wants to make superhero movies and the cinematic climate could use something a little more idiosyncratic. I certainly feel Tambor’s disappointment - dammit, Hellboy 2 is damn near perfect - but this isn’t Hollywood’s Best Friend Race. Both Neil Marshall and Davis Harbour feel like great fits for the material, and a new Hellboy film won’t erase the del Toro series from existence. It may even bring a new set of fans to them. Still, I doubt an R-rated ultra-gritty reboot will include any Barry Manilow sing-alongs.
