What Are the Most Expensive Shows to Advertise On?

Believe it or not, advertisement spots on network shows still command big money. And every year, there’s a shift in what’s considered the most desirable shows to use to reach potential customers. Ad Age has a full breakdown of what 30 seconds worth of advertising costs for all prime time programming on on all the network channels, but of the top five spots two of them are taken up by football (Sunday night football is #1 and Thursday night football is #2) but the top program for this year is Fox’s Empire. According to Ad Age, the music industry drama is bringing in an average of $497,364 per 30 second slot.

More interesting to play around with, though, is the interactive chart at the bottom of the article which lets you sort the full list by 2015 prices, 2014 prices, or the percentage of change between them. Using that, you can see which shows are losing the most viewers and.or the confidence of advertisers. At the top of THAT particular list is Sleepy Hollow which has seen its average 30 second ad price decline 51% since last year. If you didn’t have reason to be worried about Sleepy Hollow before, although even with that dramatic decline it’s still out earning other Fox series like Bones, new comer Rosewood, and Bob’s Burgers. The biggest gainer from last year was How to Get Away With Murder which saw its ad price jump 73%, but The Flash, Madam Secretary, and The Goldbergs all saw increases of over 25%.

Another thing that jumped out at me is that even among the top earning programs, prices have declined slightly from last year. A sign that perhaps advertisers are starting to value commercial time on network television less, or that their money is going towards other forms of advertisements? Maybe. There’s not enough information in the article to say for sure.
