Since Hedwig and the Angry Inch came to Broadway, we’ve seen a slew of TV stars strutting the boards in high-heeled boots and sausage-link curls. At first it was fun and thrilling seeing Michael C. Hall shed Dexter to sing about a botched sex change operation, or Neil Patrick Harris sidestep his cheekiness to get full on bawdy for a sugar daddy. Even GirlsAndrew Rannells brought heat to this iconic rock musical. But then came Glee’s Darren Criss, who seemed cute but nowhere near Hedwig-level fierce.

But just as theater fans began to worry this revival was losing momentum news came that Taye Diggs would take the role, becoming the first African American to step into Hedwig’s booty jorts. He’s been Billy Flynn in Chicago, Fiyero in Wicked, and now he’s going to play the broken-hearted and sharp-tongued rock goddess. And his poster promises this won’t be some cuddly retread.

Where most of the Hedwigs before chose open-mouthed flirting for their close-ups, Diggs gives us a pout that’s to die for and a glare that reads as sultry, strong and sad all at once. Who wore it best? No contest: Diggs.

Diggs told People, “Hedwig is the role of a lifetime. I’m looking forward to being challenged performance-wise on many levels, as well as being humbled by the musical’s social implications. I also like wearing nail polish.” (Is he Pajiba 10 material or what?)

Hedwig And The Angry Inch starring Taye Diggs will begin July 22nd.
