Welcome to the Dollhouse, a beloved indie classic and a massively important movie for every awkward young girl who grew up in the ’90s, is getting a sort-of sequel.
Solondz is putting together a cast for Wiener-Dog, an ensemble indie that is tied together thematically by a dachshund. But one of the stories also will center on Dawn Wiener, the character mercilessly teased as “Weiner Dog” in the 1995 cult hit.
Well that’s interesting. And always nice to see Heather Matarazzo in new things. Oh, wait…
It’s early days in the casting process and it’s unclear the nature of Delpy’s character, but if everything comes together, Gerwig would play the adult Dawn Wiener in one of the storylines.
Yes, in true Hollywood form (et tu, Todd Solondz?) cinema’s most tragic nerd girl will suddenly be the beautiful, blonde, waif-like Greta Gerwig.
I love Gerwig. I do. I utterly adore her and want to be in all things. But this…this seems wrong. And decidedly un-Solondzy. Sudden beauty mixed with, you know, the fact that Dawn Wiener had killed herself by Palindromes makes me think this is a trick. A weird, creepy trick.
Actually, that’s not a bad way to sum up most of Solondz’s movies.
