Once upon a time, having the Weinstein name attached to your film almost guaranteed it a slew of Oscar nominations. Those days seem very far away now in the aftermath of Harvey’s downfall and our society’s near collective decision to take out the abusive trash. Hollywood moves on, hopefully wiser and more embarrassed and not quite ready to go back to business as usual.
Still, awards season is upon us, for better or worse, and for the handful of films that remain under the banner of The Weinstein Company, choices have to be made. In the case of Wind River, the Taylor Sheridan crime thriller starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, their ultimate decision was to sever the connection with their distributors entirely, reaching a deal that will remove all mention of Weinstein from the home video and streaming release. Awards screeners will also be Weinstein-free, with their Oscar campaign set to be backed by the Tunica-Biloxi tribes. Prior to the shit-storm, Wind River was doing quite well for The Weinstein Company, with $33m domestic gross under its belt and weeks of staying power at the box office during a tough Summer.
Really, all of this is utterly inconsequential given the monstrous things Harvey Weinstein did, and we’re all too terrified of the possibility that this fucker will somehow worm his way back into the industry’s good books (fucking hell, they let Mel Gibson back in). Yet, it is important to watch how Hollywood tries to work around this elephant in the room. Do they ignore it, remove it quietly, or learn how the hell it got there in the first place?
