Apropos of nothing, you can sing that title to part of the tune of The 12 Days of Christmas.
Lars von Trier’s follow-up to a movie I don’t think I’ll ever see (Antichrist) is titled Melancholia and ironically, what von Trier has to say about it is, “No more happy endings.” The film, billed as a sci-fi thriller and described by von Trier as a “psychological disaster movie” does pique my interest. The only plot details out there are that Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kirsten Dunst play two sisters whose relationship will be explored even as a rogue planet heads toward Earth. With the destruction of our planet at hand, Dunst and Alexander Skarsgård will wed, and then…who knows? That’s pretty much all the information to be had thus far. With a cast like this (Stellan and Alexander Skarsgård, Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Rampling, Udo Kier) do we really need to know more?
FIlming began in Sweden, July 22 and Melancholia is expected to debut at Cannes next year.
