Trailer: Oh, Huh: They Made that 'Bumblebee' Movie, After All (And It Doesn't Look Bad)
The last Transformers movie — that one with Anthony Hopkins and time travel and something about the Knights of the Roundtable (I think?) — was a huge box-office disappointment in America ($130 million), so much so that when they announced they’d be making a Bumblebee spin-off, I didn’t actually think they’d go through with it. But, unlike Star Wars, Transformers is huge overseas. In fact, The Last Knight — despite being a clunker stateside — made $475 million internationally.
So, yeah: They made the Bumblebee movie, after all. Huh. And it’s coming out on Christmas. And it stars Hailee Steinfeld, and it’s directed by Travis Knight, who directed the great Kubo and Two Strings, and Bumblebee doesn’t look … bad.
Set in the 1980s, it’s got more of an Iron Giant feel than Transformers, and by God, it might just be a smaller film where the entire world isn’t destroyed three times over. I’m not saying it looks good, but I am saying that I ain’t hating it, either.
Also, I laughed at the Rick Astley gag. I’m a cheap date, clearly.
