We’ve mentioned Tom McCarthy around here often enough (one of the best sophomore directors, a runner-up for 2008’s Person of the Year, The Future of Hollywood) that you folks should be familiar with him, even if you didn’t see his brilliant directing efforts, The Station Agent and The Visitor, or his excellent turn in the final season of “The Wire,” as an unethical reporter. Oh, and he also co-wrote Pixar’s Up. (Less interesting was his supporting role in 2012, but you gotta pay the bills).
Anyway, McCarthy is heading back to the director’s chair, and — according to Vulture — he’s bringing along one of his close friends, Paul Giamatti, as well as “The Wire” alum Amy Ryan. The movie, called Win Win, is about “suburban New Jersey family and the teen runaway who changes their lives and turns around the sagging fortunes of a high school wrestling team.” That’s familiar ground for McCarthy, who excels at small stories about random people changing the lives of lonely or alienated people. And what could be more alienating than a suburban New Jersey family?
Win Win is set to begin filming this April.
