Forget Fifty Shades of Grey (seriously, can we?); Ben Wheatley’s High Rise has the hottest cast around. Starring he-of-magical-snake-hips, The Hiddleston, as well as Elisabeth Moss, Keeley Hawes, Luke Evans, Jeremy Irons, James Purefoy, Augustus Prew and Sienna Miller. There’s a little something for everyone in his adaptation of the J.G. Ballard novel, a sort of standstill Snowpiercer (kind of cool, as Hiddleston’s Only Lovers Left Alive partner, THE SWINTON, starred in that film counterpart). The story takes place in a luxury building divided by wealth and class, with those on the upper levels afforded all the best amenities (pool, supermarket, high speed elevators, while the lower levels must make do with the bare essentials. With occupants virtually isolated from the outside world, the have-nots become less satisfied with the class separation, disorder and violence ensue.
Of Hiddleston, Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers) says, “He is the perfect Laing to me. He brings an intelligence, vulnerability and humor to his roles, be they art-house or blockbuster that will make Laing come alive.” Uh, let’s not forget those hips…
But yes, he does look the part in this first image from the film:
Feel that against your belly, Anastasia!
This photo makes me think how elevated Fifty Shades could have been. Jamie Dornan might be hot, but I find him lacking the charisma of someone who’s supposed to be as irresistible as Christian Grey. Though I’ve not read more than a couple online excerpts from E. L. James’ novel, but all the teasers leave me cringing — I can’t help but imagine Hiddleston in the role.
High Rise was filmed in Belfast, and will be in theaters later this year (TBA).
