In the wee hours of yesterrday morning, Tom Cruise’s social media people tweeted out a teaser photo of Day One of filming Top Gun 2, or, Top Gun: Maverick. Which is all well and good, the tweet was met with excitement and gifs from the film’s loyal fans.

Except …

I moved my little butt over to IMDb to check out the plot and cast, see what’s popping. And…there’s no information.

No cast.

Just Tom.

By himself.

But this can’t be, it got greenlit! Has a release date and everything (July 12, 2019)!

The Hollywood Reporter article on this mysterious movie has only the vaguest of plots:

With a story set in the current time and dealing with very modern warfare, Maverick follows fighter pilots as they grapple with drone tech that is making their old style of flying obsolete. Cruise will reprise his character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Okay! So no cast aside from Tom Cruise, a plot that could also be a sitcom on FOX, and the director of Oblivion.

Both Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have said the one consistent question they’ve gotten from fans over the last thirty years is “Where’s Top Gun 2?” so they’ve clearly, finally, have decided to make it happen. Val Kilmer is very excited about it. The fans are excited. It’s indeed happening. Plot? Cast? Who needs ‘em?!

Like most events in Tom Cruise’s life, he appears to be doing it alone. Sure, we’ll obviously get a rollout of actors as they’re cast but isn’t it just more fun to imagine this movie starring Tom Cruise and only Tom Cruise, having his “fuck it, we’re going live!” moment and spending two hours flying around in his F-14A Tomcat, alone, a cheesy 80s electric guitar and that ironclad goodwill and nostalgia his soundtrack?
