THR is reporting that the third season of once-lauded, recently-derided anthology series True Detective is now officially set to go ahead at HBO.

It was of course also recently announced that this third season—should it go ahead—would feature the radiant and charismatic Mahershala Ali in a lead role. This was good news for anyone hoping for some sort of redemption for Nic Pizzolatto’s troubled show.

Those hungry for even more good news would have welcomed what actually prompted the announcement from HBO: The network had been waiting for the right director to sign up before giving the green light to the new season, and they found one in the shape of one of the more gifted craftsmen working behind the camera today. Yes indeed: Jeremy Saulnier, he of Blue Ruin (2013)—a lean, mean, and quite brilliant anti-revenge revenge thriller—and Green Room (2015)—a near flawless genre picture about a punk band trapped in a deadly neo-Nazi venue (and one of the best movies of recent years)—will be tagging along for the True Detective ride.

Now, any excitement should be tempered by the fact that Pizzolatto will still be the show’s sole writer (apart from one episode, which is to be delivered by Deadwood’s David Milch), but nevertheless: Ali + Saulnier = My god, let me see that right now.
