I honestly don’t know how excited I am about Rashida Jones’ new cop comedy, Angie Tribeca (which comes from executive producer Nancy Walls and her husband, Steve Carell), because we already have a great cop comedy now. It’s called Brooklyn Nine-Nine. You should watch it.
But Jere Burns (WYNN DUFFY!) is in Angie Tribeca, and it’s described as something more akin to Airplane! and Police Squad than Brooklyn Nine-Nine so I’d definitely at least give it a shot.
Or I would have until I saw their release strategy. I had to read it a few times to make sure I caught the gist:
The first 10 episodes of the police procedurals spoof will air in a 25-hour marathon on TBS starting at 9/8c on Sunday, Jan. 17 and ending at 10/9c on Monday, Jan. 18.That means the 10 half-hours will be repeated five times for ultimate binge-ability. What’s more, all episodes will air commercial-free, according to TBS.
After the initial binge, TBS will immediately roll out the next batch of 10 Angie Tribeca episodes on a weekly basis, Mondays at 9:30/8:30c starting Jan. 25.
So, they want us to binge-watch the first 10-episode season in one day, and after we’ve caught up, watch the second season on a weekly basis starting the next week.
That’s not a good strategy, unless the real strategy is to burn off two seasons of Angie Tribeca as quickly as possible so that we can binge watch it at own own pace a few months later on Netflix.
As if to make things more confusing, there’s also this:
Playing to Angie Tribeca’s absurdity, TBS isn’t calling that second batch of 10 episodes a “second season.” Instead, it’s labeling each one of those weekly Monday night episodes a separate one-episode season. (In other words, the second batch of 10 episodes are being called “seasons 2 through 11” of the show.)That will “allow viewers to experience the emotional highs of a season premiere and season finale in one powerful 30-minute package,” quips the network’s press release.
In other news, my DVR just read this and told me to fuck off.
Here’s the trailer for the show.
(Related: Vivian saw the footage from the series at SXSW earlier this year and wasn’t impressed).
