There Is a Reason Karen Gillan Is Wearing Child-Sized Clothes in That 'Jumanji' Photo

A couple of days ago, The Rock debuted the first photo from the upcoming Jumanji reboot, and it raised some concerns, specifically why a female character Dwayne Johnson described as a “girl” who has “Chutzpah, guts, nerve and talent” and as a “girl” who is “bad ass” and as the “girl” who is playing the “most important role in the movie.”

But why was this bad-ass “girl” wearing little “girl’s” clothes?

Apparently, there is a reason for it, and presumably that reason is more than just, “Holy shit, Karen Gillan looks fiiiiiiiiine in a short skirt.”

The Rock reiterated the same to Jill Pantozzi over on Hitfix:

What could that reason be? I suspect that in the scene depicted they’re intentionally playing stock characters as a way to parody stock characters. Or maybe they’re playing safari dress up characters for a movie within a movie. Or maybe they’re playing characters in a 90’s board game. Another theory is that she’s playing a time-traveling grown-up version of Kristen Dunst’s character from the original film, still dressed in 90’s clothes.

The costumes, as Johnson says, are meant to be “vintage 90s” for a reason.

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: #JUMANJI Our dope 90's vintage costumes will all make sense when our plot's revealed. Truuuuuust me😂👊🏾. The journey continues.. "Moose Finbar" (Kevin Hart). "Ruby Roundhouse" (Karen Gillan). "Professor Shelly Oberon" (Jack Black). "Dr. Smolder Bravestone" 'cause well.. he smolders. Hard workin' and FUN first day of shooting in the jungle with this talented and crazy motley crew. Jack is brilliant, Karen is bad assery, Kevin is sharply hilarious and I smell good. Extremely hard trying to keep a straight face in these scenes. Too funny. We're makin' a good one. More to come.. #JUMANJI #WishFulfillment #TheGameThatPlaysYou

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson also released the first video from the set, and the Dad humor is pretty great.
