The trailer for The Fifth Estate, which comes from Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2) seems to suffer from what so many historical features suffer from, namely the insistence of talking about the events as they’re happening with the benefit of hindsight. I guarantee you that no one actually said to Julian Assange while the events were transpiring that, “This is the biggest leak of classified information in history!”
The film seems very interested in turning Assange into a one of the great heroes in all of history (“Lives are at stake!” “But what about the lives of THOSE CIVILIANS!”), which I’d appreciate more if Cumberbatch’s Assange didn’t look like a leering psychopath.
“HE’S NOT A JOURNALIST. HE’S A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY.”
“THIS IS INFORMATION THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW.”
“WE NEED TO CRUSH THESE GUYS.”
“THIS MOVIE NEEDED A BETTER SCREENWRITER.”
