The New 'Doctor Strange' Shortlist Is Officially More Interesting than the Actual 'Doctor Strange'

For months now, we have all been speculating on who will ultimately end up as the lead in Marvel’s Phase III movie, Doctor Strange. I don’t know enough about Marvel comic books to appropriately place him and his importance in the Marvel universe, but I can say that — in the pop-culture universe — the number of people who could tell you any details about Doctor Strange is about the same as the number of people who can name more than four Supreme Court Justices (sadly, around 20 percent).

According to Wikipedia, Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. And based on the pictures of Doctor Strange from the comic-book, the only appropriate casting would be a young, muscle-bound Vincent Price with a crew cut.

But since Vincent Price is dead, and since Victor Newman from The Young and the Restless probably isn’t A-list enough, Marvel has settled on a different roster of actors. According to Variety, this is the current shortlist for Doctor Strange:

Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac, Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, and Matthew McConaughey.

Here’s what I’ll say about this list: McConaughey won’t do your silly comic-book movie, Marvel. He’s a thespian now. He does Nolan movies. Leto is a supreme douche who will alienate some viewers. Hawke is not that much of a draw anymore. Gyllenhaal has broken out from franchise movies and become an exceptional actor the last few years and should stick with that, and McGregor is too Obi-Wan for the role. That leaves Oscar Isaac, who nobody outside of huge Coen Brothers fans really knows.

Victor Newman is looking like a pretty good choice, after all, isn’t he?

You’re missing the boat by not hiring Jack Huston.
