The Mystery And Excitement Of First Looks: New Images From Tintin, Soderbergh's Haywire, And (FINALLY) Cabin In The Woods

There’s something bizarre about the idea that people get excited over a single image from a movie, and yet, I admit that I sometimes do. A few images from a smattering of films have appeared over the past few days, and some of them are quite intriguing. Ready?

First off, is a new image from the Peter Jackson produced, Steven Spielberg directed The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn, a film that is sort of an odd choice — the Tintin books aren’t particularly well-known in the US, although I read a few of them as a child when I was in South Africa. Regardless, it’s another performance-capture film, and those tend to creep me the fuck out for some reason. Here’s a clear look at Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) and his faithful hound Snowy.

Yeah, doesn’t really do much for me either.

Next is a film that does get me going, and not just because it stars the uber-hot (and literally quite dangerous) Gina Carano, most well known for being a professional MMA fighter (and for being uber-hot). The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh, which is an event I’m always excited for — even Soderbergh’s failures are incredibly interesting. Here’s the very brief plot synopsis:

After she is betrayed on a mission in Barcelona, freelancing Covert Operative Mallory Kane (Carano) is forced to protect her family and go after those who betrayed her.

Soderbergh’s been taking gambles on new actors recently, most recently in his unfortunately dull The Girlfriend Experience, starring adult film star Sasha Grey. This one’s got a mixed bag of a cast as well, including Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender (easy, Joanna), Charming Potato, and Michael Angarano. Here’s the pic:

Yup, that’s a woman with a gun, alright. Here, these may be a bit more to your taste:

That, in case you’re wondering, is Carano handing McgGegor his ass like a hat. I must say, it’s refreshing to see a movie about a female badass who actually looks like a badass, and not a stick-thin chick edited to look that way (*cough*AngelinaJolieInSalt*cough*).

Finally, we’ve got the first image from a movie I was beginning to think would never see the light of day, Drew Goddard’s Cabin In The Woods. The film, which Goddard (who wrote Cloverfield) co-wrote with Joss Whedon, was completed in 2009 and has sat on a shelf while the mess over at MGM sorted itself out. Unfortunately, it was also converted in post-production to 3D, which is never a good thing, so let’s hope a 2D version is released as well, because post-3D routinely sucks balls. Anyway, the film is supposedly a twist on the “young people trapped in a cabin and horrible hijinks ensue” and is supposed to be quite tongue-in-cheek.

What’s most surprising is that it’s been moldering in MGM’s basement for this long, and yet very little is known about it. Anyway, here’s one of the stars, Chris Hemsworth. The film also stars Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kanz, Jesse Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Jenkins.

Not much going on there, other than the realization that Hemsworth is a fucking giant.
