File this under Widespread Yet Unconfirmed Rumors.
The Mindy Project has reportedly not been picked up for a fourth season at Fox, but it’s not dead yet. It may just be moving to our computers, with a new home at Hulu. Which makes sense, since given its ratings, that seems to be how most of us watch the show anyway.
This move has the potential to do great things for The Mindy Project. By the end of the last season, that show was in dire need of a shake-up. Maybe a change of scenery, production-wise, is just the thing to help it find its feet and return it to the kind of insightful, character-driven comedy we once knew it to be.
Of course, this could go the other way. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt springs to mind, the last few episodes of which— the episodes made after the switch from NBC to Netflix had been announced— felt like a disjointed mess of a joke being played on all of us who had already fallen in love with the show. And of course Community’s move to Yahoo hasn’t done great things for their ratings or reviews. In such a major change of platform, it seems easy to lose track of either tone and quality or audience, or both. If Mindy does move to Hulu, it will be interesting to see how that changes things. If Mindy doesn’t move to Hulu, I doubt it will be too long before Mindy Kaling has some other awesome new project. The woman has basically lived in our televisions nonstop for the last decade. She’s going to be just fine.
