Every new revelation concerning director Todd Phillips’s movie The Joker makes me angrier than the last.
Phillips — a man known for writing and directing the exact same movie three times and pretending it was a trilogy — reportedly rewrote scenes before filming them with Beetz and The Joker himself, Joaquin Phoenix.
Is it just me or does Beetz seem like she’s not all that excited about the whole “making it up as we go along” thing? She mentions the script was great and then that it was thrown out the window. She makes sure to get it in that she hasn’t seen a final cut. Then she praises the cast, but not really the stuff they came up with on the fly.
It’s almost like DCEU is embracing how far they are from the MCU’s success and accidentally widening instead of closing that gap. Instead of allowing someone like Taika Waititi to go nuts with an established character that needed to move toward levity, they handed over Batman and Superman to Zack Snyder. Cue “fun” murder and movies so poorly lit you couldn’t see The Dark Knight scowl.
Moviemakers can change many things in the translation from page to screen (see Wolverine’s height or the removal of the word “mutant” from Scarlet Witch’s backstory) and still get their internal mechanisms correct. If instead the screenwriters and directors don’t care about what makes the heroes tick, you get a Batman and Superman that straight up murder people and audiences that do not take it well. Warner Bros. and DCEU seem to be so intent on catching up with MCU that they are more than willing to sacrifice key heroic traits in the name of releasing movies.
Ultimately, the more I hear about The Joker, the more I expect the entire thing to be a literal joke. The ending definitely turns into The Hangover 4, flipping Polaroids during the credits to show that everything in the film took place in The Joker’s mind as he twitched in an Arkham Asylum cell.
Actually, I’m cool with that.
