It’s been announced that CBS is developing a television adaptation of The Island of Dr.Moreau with the creator of Sleepy Hollow. I had not realized we were all clamoring for such an adaptation but I suppose with the success (?) of Zoo the next step for CBS was “what if the animals that were attacking people were people/animal hybrids?”

The big piece of news about this adaptation is that the titular Dr.Moreau will be a woman in this version. I’m not opposed to gender-swapping characters from source material, I think it was actually one of the things that Hannibal did very well with Dr.Bloom and Freddy Lounds, but I am suspicious of them putting that information out so far in advance. As though they’re expecting people to be in favor of the project simply because they made a woman the lead, without any information about casting attached to it. Here’s hoping that the internet has just made me cynical and the part is either true to the source material with just that minor casting shift, or that if it’s terrible it’s terrible for completely other reasons.

As a side note, I’m still disappointed that the 1996 The Island of Dr.Moreau isn’t available on Netflix so I can’t double-feature it with the documentary about the movie.
