The Internet Reacted As You Might Expect to the First Set Photos of Scarjo in 'Ghost in the Shell'

Ghost in the Shell, the Japanese media franchise originally published as a manga, began filming in Hong Kong this week, with Rila Fukushima in a supporting role …

… and Scarlett Johansson in the lead.

What I’m saying is, from now until the movie is released — and probably bombs, because white-washing is officially the box-office kiss of death now — it’s going to be wall-to-wall rage every time a poster, a trailer, a character promo, or a Ghost in the Shell keychain is released.

Etc., etc., etc.

The thing is, Ghost in the Shell might be great, but it won’t matter. White-washing accusations are going to follow it for the entirety of its cinematic life. Everyone in the cast will be asked about it in every interview. Press junkets are going to look like Jake Tapper interrogating Donald Trump. White washing will be the only thing remembered about the film in 10 years, and that’s too bad, because a great property shouldn’t bomb based on the one thing that the producers did to ensure it wouldn’t bomb.

But it will.

The smart thing to do, really, is throw in a scene or two with Spider-Man and Captain America, change a few names, call it a Black Widow Goes to Hong Kong, and profit.
