The Hilariously Bizarre Inspiration for the Voice of Choo Choo on 'Justified'

Those of you who are watching the final season of Justified have been privy to a reall goddamn gem of a season that’s brought back some fan favorites called back to some earlier moments in the series. Plus, there have been some phenomenal new characters added to the season, played by the likes of Sam Elliot, Jeff Fahey, and Garret Dillahunt. Even Jake Busey made a brief appearance last week:

But no one has made as big a splash this season as Mundo / Choo-Choo, the slow-witted goon and henchman for the crew of the character played by Dillahunt.

Choo Choo is played by an actor named Duke Davis Roberts, and Justified was really his first role, although he’ll be in a March episode of Battle Creek and he’s in an upcoming episode of The Night Shift.

He also spends quite a bit of time on Reddit, especially in Justified discussions threads. He sounds like a tremendously nice guy, and has only the nicest things to say about the cast and crew of Justified, as you might expect.

One thing that struck me as bizarre, however, was his answer to where he found inspiration for the voice of Choo Choo:

Sling Blade was my first source haha. But also weirdly enough the gopher from winnie the pooh. He has that weird lisp hahah

Billy Bob in Sling Blade I could definitely see. But Gopher?

We can also thank Bobby Campo for nailing the audition for last season’s character, Yolo, because Duke Davis Roberts auditioned for that role, too, and lost out, which freed him this season to take Choo Choo.
